Olde Towne Businesses 'Sail-a-thon’
10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Join the Olde Towne Businesses on the Historic High Street corridor as they offer merchandise on the sidewalks and in their shops.

Colonel Crawford’s ‘Living History Tour’
9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Join Portsmouth’s founder, Colonel William Crawford for a stroll through our quaint historic seaport.  The city has the oldest shipyard in America and one of the nation’s largest collections of surviving historical homes.  The stroll will also take a trip to and through Trinity Episcopal Church – circa 1762 – hosted by Reverend Braidfoot, as portrayed by local historical and author, Dean Burgess.

Colonial Games for Children         

1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Join Colonel Crawford and Lady Abigail as they show children the games they played during the Colonial period.  Games in colonial America were always fun, but more than just being fun, most of them were intended to help learn a lesson or a craft. Hand-eye coordination was essential to the youth of days past, so come and join us as we learn some of the games and have a "boat-load" of fun.  You'll even learn to grind corn just like the Native Americans of Virginia did when Pocahontas was an Algonquin Princess.

Elizabeth River Photo Cruises
Take a short sail aboard Portsmouth’s own schooner “Spirit of Independence” and view the schooners from the river with scheduled tours on Saturday.  The schooner “Spirit of Independence” will be a participant in the 2009 Schooner Race and was also one of the tall ships featured at Norfolk’s Harborfest.

Location: Leaving from Ocean Marine Yacht Center along the riverfront.  45 min. tours every hour.  $12.00 ea.

The Olde Towne Farmers Market     
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Farmer’s Market, a new addition to Olde Towne, will be open on Saturday starting at 9:30 am and located on Middle Street just behind the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame with fresh produce and products available for purchase.

The Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra

Join the award-winning Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Robert Winstin as it celebrates Schooner Days with a FREE open rehearsal! The celebrated VYSO will openly rehearse music of the seas - especially “Pirates of the Caribbean” and other swashbuckling songs. The performance will be staged at their new facilities located in the New Colony Theater located on the four hundred block of High Street. Kids will be provided snacks and all can experience the newly renovated theater in a fun scavenger hunt!

Tented exhibits with various maritime related craftsmen will be set up on both sides of High Street Landing.  Most adorned in authentic wardrobe and demonstrating various skills and crafts relating to wooden shipbuilding and sailor made folk art.  What skills would a sailor need to have in order to work on a colonial ship?  What cottage industries were needed to support and outfit the ship? Join the crew of the York Privateer and learn about early American Maritime Crafts by participating in hands-on craft programs and participatory drills.  Free.


Canvas Work - Learn how to make sails and mend your clothing.


Wood Work
- Try your hand at using period shipwright tools.

  
Rope Making
- How is rope made? lend a hand and help make that mile off rope needed to rig a ship.

  
Spinning
- The Captain ordered 100 wool caps for the crew.  Who makes them and how?

  
Net Making

Teach a man to fish and he eats today. Teach him to make a net and he can feed the village, net making 101.

  
Bosun’s Skills
- All hands report on deck! The bosun wants the starboard to work on your knots and splices Larboard watch will make
baggy wrinkle?

  
Navigation Skills
- Where are we and how did we get here?  Navigation is an art that is best learned before we leave port.

  
Cannon Drill & Military Equipment
- Prepare to repel boarders! Report to your guns and man your stations for military drill on the cannons, muskets and swords!

  
Musical Performances / Tavern Games

Join the crew for a round of shanties and tap your toes to the music of the music of the ships and taverns. Learn some period games and relax before the Bosun calls you back to work.

Departure of the Schooners

Activities begin around 10 am and run throughout the day. Similar activities repeated from Saturday.  Departure of some of the schooners can be seen throughout the day depending on winds and weather.
